082012-Hair-Oils-Lead-400Almost everyday I find myself suggesting different types of oils to my clients to use for dry skin or hair. Using oils for beautifying purposes dates back hundreds, if not thousands of years. For centuries women have sworn by all-natural hair oils. Beauty oils once forgotten are experiencing a resurgence, quickly becoming a favorite. It’s no surprise that they are the first choice for fighting common skin, hair and body problems. So whether you have fine or coarse tresses, oily or dry skin, check out a few of Mother Nature’s best moisture-rich serums for your hair type. The best oil formulations are those that are “cold-pressed”- they retain integrity of ingredients and freshness. Beware of bad oils that are heavy and greasy and contain large amounts of heavier oils like mineral, lanolin, and petroleum oil, that sit on the surface of the skin and clog pores. Below are the oils to look for in your beauty and hair products.

Jojoba Oil- Strengthens Skin

Besides helping to reduce oil production, jojoba oil also strengthens the skin

Grapeseed Oil- Protects the Skin

Composed mostly of linoleic acid, antioxidant rich grapeseed oil is said to protect skin against bacteria and provide a healthy dose of hydration

Tea Tree Oil- For Acneic Skin

A natural antibacterial, tea tree oil carries oxygen to the pores, killing acne causing bacteria. It also has a great soothing effect on a dry and flaky scalp

Rosehip Oil- For Tone & Texture

Rich in fatty acids and vitamin C, rosehip oil can alleviate the common symptoms of sun damage like uneven tone and texture of the skin

Primrose Oil- For Elasticity

Improves elasticity of the skin so it “bounces back”

Olive Oil- Nourishes & Moisturizes

Olive oil is one of the best hydrators and nourishes -a dry skin defender. It also good for dry hair, restores elasticity and shine but maybe too heavy for those with thin or fine hair.

Almond Oil- Soothes &  Calms

Any skin irritation can be alleviated with almond oil. It soothes and calms irritated skin

Camelia Oil- Stimulates Collagen

Promotes collagen production for younger looking skin

Argan Oil- Antioxidant Skin & Hair Smoother

This nut-sourced oil, popular in hair products, provides antioxidant and soothing benefits. It also protects the hair and makes it smoother, softer and less frizzy

Sweet Almond Oil- Improves Hair Health

Great for thicker, wavier hair types, the blend of vitamins A, B and E helps add shine and body. The oil heals split ends, improves circulation in the scalp to produce stronger hair, and can add luster and shine to dull hair.

Coconut Oil- Hair Reinforcer

Because of its molecular structure it penetrates deep into the hair shaft to strengthen weak spots. It also has antibacterial properties when used on the surface of the skin

Avocado Oil- Fights Hair Breakage

Avocado oil is excellent for the coarse hair because it is rich in proteins, amino and fatty acids, and it has high levels of vitamins A, D, and E. The proteins help fill in all the crevices in your hair’s cuticles, so each strand is stronger and better protected from future breakage. Since it is a  thicker oil, it works best on medium- to coarse-textured hair

Rosemary Oil- Hair Stimulator

Rosemary oil is great for mixing with other natural oils because it stimulates the hair follicles. High in iron, calcium, and vitamin B, the oil acts as an anti-aging agent, helps boost color, shine, thickness, and prevents hair loss. Good for thin hair
